Free Christmas Quizzes
We make a lot of Christmas quizzes, and we'd like you to try a few before you spend anything. So here are five of them, free: three picture rounds, a word scramble and a match-up, all printable and all with answer sheets. Sign up below and we'll email you a link to the lot.
Once you've signed up, you'll get an email with a link to a Google Drive folder where you can open and print each quiz as a PDF. You might find a few bonus quizzes in there too. After that we'll send you a free current affairs quiz every week and the occasional note about new quizzes, and you can unsubscribe whenever you like.
Christmas Films
Twelve Christmas films, each shown as a single still, with space on the sheet to write the answers. Home Alone and Elf will get most teams off the mark straight away, and The Snowman is in there for anyone who still can't hear "Walking in the Air" without welling up. The trickier ones are the films people have definitely seen but can't quite name from one frame. There's a clues version with some letters filled in, which is handy when the youngest player and the oldest are on the same team. It makes a gentle opener for a family quiz on Christmas Day.
Mystery Christmas Film Posters
This one is harder. Each of the twelve questions is a small cropped corner of a Christmas film poster, and you have to work out the film from that. Home Alone is in there, and so is Die Hard, so the quiz has quietly settled that argument for you. Some of the posters give themselves away with a colour or a face, and some are a lot meaner than that. It's the one we'd save for the pub or the grown-ups' table, with the clues version on standby if heads start going down.
UK Christmas TV Specials
A picture round of British Christmas TV specials: name the show from a still taken from one of its festive episodes. Only Fools and Horses, Gavin and Stacey and The Royle Family are all in there, which tells you the sort of Christmas telly we're talking about. There are soaps and a Saturday night favourite too, plus one that will only get a cheer from people who were at school in the eighties. Clues version included. Good for a British crowd of mixed ages, because everybody has a different Christmas special they remember.
Christmas Movie Word Scramble
Twelve Christmas film titles with the letters jumbled into new words, and your job is to put them back. To give you an idea, "Aeon Mohel" is Home Alone. Some are short and fall out quickly, and some are long enough to keep a table busy for a while. It doesn't need any pictures, so it's a good one to print a few copies of and hand round, or to read out if you're running the quiz over a video call. The answer sheet is included for whoever's in charge.
Christmas Customs Around the World
A match-up quiz: a list of countries on one side and their Christmas traditions on the other, and you draw the lines between them. Some are easy if you've been to a German Christmas market. Others take more thought, like the country where a lot of families sit down to watch the same Disney programme at three o'clock on Christmas Eve. It's a nice change of pace in the middle of a quiz full of films and telly, and it works well with children, who tend to be better at it than the adults expect.
How to run a Christmas quiz with these
You don't need much. Print one quiz sheet per team (one per household if you're playing over a video call) and keep the answer sheet for whoever is reading out the answers. The picture rounds print fine in colour or in black and white, although the posters are easier in colour.
Five rounds is about right for an evening. We'd start with Christmas Films to warm everyone up, put the word scramble and the customs match-up in the middle, and finish with the posters, because the last round should be the one people argue about. If you've got a wide range of ages, swap in the clues versions of the picture rounds for the teams that need them. Nobody needs to know.
Teams of three or four work best. Give each round ten minutes, swap sheets for marking, and keep a prize back for the team that comes last, because they will have had the most fun.
